NaNoWrimo 2016: Day 3

308. Thankful for a favorite place... home
#cy365: Thankful for a favorite place… home.

Yesterday I kept “Just one more thing, and then I’ll write!”ing. I’m caught up on all the internet things I haven’t looked at in months, let me tell you.

Anyway, my main character needs to figure out what she wants to do with her life. I made her cousin a graphic designer and one of her potential love interests is a writer. On that note, I’m not married to there actually being a love interest, but I also thought it would be fun if I went all out soap opera here in a minute. So indecisive! The other potential love interest seems like a hooligan.¬†My book is drifting into Gilmore Girls and Murder She Wrote and away from Twin Peaks. I want it all. Probably Gilmore Girls least of all, though.

Oooh, doesn’t Murder She Wrote/Twin Peaks sound like the most perfect mashup ever? Imagine Jessica Fletcher and Agent Cooper teaming up to solve Laura Palmer’s murder. Of course, JB would have had it sorted in a single episode. /fanfic

I digress, what should my main character do? She’s job hunting. It’s her current crux

Eventually I ran out of other things to look at and I did a few sprints, not enough to get 1667 words, but enough that I still had a teensy lead on the official daily goal. I wrote 1,571 words yesterday.

5347 / 50000 words. 11% done!

After I finished writing, I did this new Yoga with Adriene video and let me tell you it was the Perfect followup to several hours of procrastination and 45 minutes of writing.

Eleven Months into 30 before 30

30 before 30

1.¬†Cook 30 new recipes 86/30 I made 3 new recipes this month! I actually made 2 other things for the first time, but one was something super easy that I made without a recipe (daiya quesadillas) and the other was so altered in ingredients (gumbo is literally not gumbo without okra) that I didn’t feel right including it.

Louisiana Red Beans & Rice Korean Hot Pot Rainbow Millet-Hummus Collard Summer Rolls

84. Louisiana Red Beans and Rice (One-Dish Vegan)
85. Korean Hot Pot (One-Dish Vegan)
86. Rainbow Millet-Hummus Collard Summer Rolls (But I Could Never Go Vegan!)

2. Shoot 1 roll of film per month. 11/12 I got a super late start this month again, I didn’t actually finish my June roll until July 4th and then I decided to finish a mysterious roll that was in my Vivitar Ultra Wide & Slim. Who knows when I started it? My hope was that it would actually only have a few shots left and I could pop a fresh roll into it and use it for July but that didn’t happen until the 14th! The roll is about halfway shot, now!

7. Reach Advanced Level yoga with Erin Motz’s DoYouYoga course.

16.¬†Veganize 10 of my family’s recipes. 0/10

I thought this was going to be one of the easy ones, but my mom’s recipe cards are missing! I have some family church cookbooks that have some distant relatives in them, but most of the recipes that appeal to me are vegan already! One of them is for canned vegetable soup and another for pickles!

17. Make canned pickles!

My plan is to make the kind of pickles you can pretty much eat immediately. Basic vinegary cabbages, or something. Totally delicious and stress free. Not going to get into heat sealing yet. Doing what I can to get this stuff done. Real pickles is still a future goal! I got some super cute little jars earlier this month, so… that’s progress!

21. Start a 365 photo set on my 29th birthday. Finish it! Here are some of my favorite shots from this month:

23. See five movies in the theater 2/5

Starting this goal took longer than I had expected! It seems unbelievable that we hadn’t seen a movie in the theater since sometime before my last birthday, but it just hasn’t been in our budget.

28. Write a list of major cleaning projects and do them all!

  • move all furniture and clean behind/under it. (fridge, dressers, couch, entertainment center.) (Progress: Calling this done. Kitchen, bathroom, living room done in month 6. One half of bedroom done in month 7. Library is still such a work in progress that I doubt I’ll get it finished, but all of the rooms we use regularly are looking good. I just need to do a little more in the bedroom and some of that requires getting rid of furniture. It should get done in the next year)
  • clean the fridge out. (Progress: Fridge done. Still need to hit the freezer!)
  • take ALL THAT RECYCLING so the cozy system can start working. (Progress: Done.)
  • take everything to Goodwill.¬†(Progress: One carload done, only have a few boxes left to go.)
  • finish each room. If I still have to have stuff piled in a corner, at least let it be stored in a plastic tub. (Progress: Living room: Done. Laundry room: Done. Dining Room: as done as it will get. )
  • closet overhaul.¬†(Progress: Started the bedroom closet. Made a lot of hanger space, so far, need to work on the stuff that‚Äôs on shelves next!)
  • Springtime Garden Tidy. (Progress: I managed everything by the back lot, and now it’s summer and unbearable. Major progress though! Calling it done. Everything else is maintenance.)

Only one month to go! I’ll be hustling to get some of this stuff done and accepting that other things just won’t happen, yet. But I’m not giving up on anything!

Ten Months into 30 before 30

2. Shoot 1 roll of film per month. 10/12
Three-Hundred & Three
I got a little bit of a late start because I had to buy some film. It’s not as easy to find as it used to be! I got some a couple of weeks into the month and loaded into my Diana Mini because I haven’t shot anything in it in over a year. It’s shoots more frames than you usually get from a¬†24 exposure roll, though, so it might not have been the best choice for a month when I got a late start, I haven’t quite finished the roll yet.

I feel like I have reached a level of acceptance. Whatever I get done in the next two months, even if I don’t finish every task, this has been so worth it.

20. Get everything boxed or bagged to donate. I made SO MUCH progress on this this month. In addition to adding loads of stuff to boxes and bags, Shaun got most of it taken to the donation center. Culling stuff you have had for 15+ years can be an emotional thing, though.

  • take everything to Goodwill.¬†(Progress: I just keep adding boxes and bags, but Shaun took a full carload to the donation center, no room for me!)
  • finish each room. If I still have to have stuff piled in a corner, at least let it be stored in a plastic tub. (Progress: Living room: Done. Laundry room: Done.)
  • closet overhaul.¬†(Progress: Started the bedroom closet. Made a lot of hanger space, so far, need to work on the stuff that’s on shelves next!)
  • Springtime Garden Tidy. (Progress: I pulled down a lot of the excess star jasmine that was really taking over the back fence. I should have done this before it started growing up so it’s not as tidy as it COULD be but it looks so much better. I also cleaned the grass and trees that were growing in the street by our house, edged all the sidewalks, got a new hose and a cuter, more accessible way to store it on the porch this month. My mom went around with her big ratchet clippers and helped me cut down some ill-placed trees, I just need to dig them up now.)

18. Print another photo book.

Since this project has involved going through and re-editing my photos it has taken a long time. I’m somewhere in the middle of October of 2007 for a photo book that will only span¬†June – December of that year and I’m already past 200 pages. When I was first starting to really practice and study photography I was super prolific, whoops. I’m going to admit¬†that I might not be able to afford to actually PRINT this book until after my birthday, I will consider this done if I finish all of the other work involved because I have put¬†many hours into¬†it.

Here’s a couple of two-page spreads I’m really happy with:

book001 book002

In 2007 I had some interest in being a commercial photographer, at least in terms stock photography. I have a lot of stuff I shot with that aim that I really love in retrospect but actually shooting photography for someone other than myself wasn’t fun at the time and I decided to focus on more emotive/photo diary work. I’m curious what future photo books will be like, especially everything past the death of my dad in December of 2008, when I realized that capturing and remembering my real life was the most important thing to me artistically.

21. Start a 365 photo set on my 29th birthday. Finish it!

  • move all furniture and clean behind/under it. (fridge, dressers, couch, entertainment center.) (Progress: Kitchen, bathroom, living room done in month 6. One half of bedroom done in month 7.)
  • clean the fridge out. (Progress: I did the fridge a¬†couple of weeks ago. I was surprised by how many jars of useless stuff I had in there. I felt like I was being good at keeping it down to the essentials, but nope! I still need to clean the freezer, but in general it stays a little cleaner.)
  • take ALL THAT RECYCLING so the cozy system can start working. (Progress: Still need to take all the paper and cardboard, but the rest of it is kept¬†sorted and tidy.)
  • take everything to Goodwill.¬†(Progress: I just keep adding boxes and bags. I have SO MUCH that’s on it’s way out, I can’t wait to reclaim that space!)
  • finish each room. If I still have to have stuff piled in a corner, at least let it be stored in a plastic tub. (Progress: Living room I would call done. I hung some curtains this month There are lots of living room photos above in my yoga shots.)
  • closet overhaul.¬†(Progress: Lots of little adjustments but nothing worth noting.)
  • NEW Springtime Garden Tidy. (Progress: Gardening update.)

2. Shoot 1 roll of film per month. 7/12 I knew we were going on a trip this month so I thought a roll in the Split-Cam would be fun!

7. Reach Advanced Level yoga with Erin Motz‚Äôs DoYouYoga course.¬†I did some really non-yoga yoga to start the month, this 14 day shred with Sadie Nardini. Generally not my thing, but I’ve been wanting to do more real cardio, so I think it’s been good for me. I don’t regret doing it, but I doubt I’ll ever repeat it.¬†I got knocked down by some bad allergies in the middle of it, which made breathing a struggle, but I made it through the 14 days. I decided to check in with Wii Fit yoga after I finished that challenge and immediately pulled something in my shoulders, so I had to take some time off to heal. Slow and easy stretching yoga for a week or so and I think I’ll be back on my feet.

8.¬†Finish¬†5 video games. 2/5¬†I’ve left some visual novels off of this, but I am counting Gone Home, I don’t know why, maybe because it was so damned good. I also played through a couple of scenarios in Hatoful Boyfriend, but it’s so quick and silly, and I played The Yawhg with friends and with Shaun a few times. Mostly I have been playing Dragon Age: Inquisition for a couple of months and I beat it on March 5th, I clocked just over 100 hours in my first play-through and started a new character immediately. I need to mix it up a little because I’m not going to count it twice if/when I beat it again!

  1. move all furniture and clean behind/under it. (fridge, dressers, couch, entertainment center.) (Progress: Kitchen, bathroom, living room done in month 6. Moved everything on the side of our bedroom where the bed is this month, still have a lot to do in there!)
  2. clean the fridge out. (Progress: I was in a bit of a rush the other day, but we were between groceries and it was pretty empty, so I gave the whole interior a good wipe down. I know there are some things in the back recesses that still need tossed, though!)
  3. take ALL THAT RECYCLING so the cozy system can start working. (Progress: Still need to take the paper. Also have another full load of cardboard boxes already.)
  4. take everything to Goodwill. (Progress: Added two boxes and one large tub to the piles of stuff that needs to go.)
  5. finish each room. If I still have to have stuff piled in a corner, at least let it be stored in a plastic tub. (Progress: Got curtains hung in the living room, I need one tension bar and 4 hooks installed to pull the curtains back with and the room will be done.)
  6. closet overhaul. (Progress: Just little bits here and there throughout the month in the bedroom closet. I really thought I would get it done this month, but other life things kind of got in the way.)

25th of February – 25th of March is a short month! I didn’t get everything done this month that I had hoped to.¬†I’m definitely starting to feel the crunch on some of these, I need to make a timeline list and work on some of the more ongoing things, like scanning my mom’s photos, more often.

Three Months into 30 before 30

2. Shoot 1 roll of film per month. 3/12

Ninety-Two
I got a late start. I ran out of film and couldn’t find it in the first several stores I checked. I¬†tracked some down¬†a week into November and loaded into my Minolta Himatic-G. I have a little pile of film accumulating! Maybe I’ll be able to get it developed over a break next month.

3. Write 9th NaNoWriMo novel.

Lots of updates about this in the NaNoWriMo tag!

7. Reach Advanced Level yoga on MyYogaPro.

Untitled

What I really mean by “reach advanced” is: feel fairly confident in the Advanced level classes, I think.

I have done every Beginner and Intermediate level class. I had to make a few modifications to get through some of the Intermediate classes so I repeated them all a second time through with marked improvement. My practice is mostly pretty strong. This month has been harder because I do yoga in the morning¬†and on the weekends we write in the morning and on Sunday mornings we also get groceries, so I have not done yoga¬†every¬†Sunday. I did get started on the advanced classes this month, though. They’re intense but I feel super strong and awesome after I get through one. So far the necessity for modification matches my first run through the Intermediate classes.

16.¬†Veganize 10 of my family’s recipes. 0/10

Not quite started¬†yet! But my mom brought over one of her family’s church cookbooks. It’s full of distant relatives! The only close relative¬†recipe was from my Great Grandmother, and it was already vegan, whoops! She brought another church cookbook over just yesterday and it looks more promising. She’s going to hunt down her recipe box for me, too!

18. Print another photo book.

book

This has been¬†an excellent source of NaNoWriMo procrastination. I started back in my 2007 folders. That’s when I got my first dSLR. I got 300+ edits done before I realized I had only worked through a month and a half of my photos from that year. I am SO HAPPY with the new edits and how the book is coming together so far.

22. ¬†Finish watching 5 of the TV series we’re currently working through on Netflix. 5/5

You know when you don’t want a thing to end so you stop watching it for a long time? That was Twin Peaks. But we finished it at the end of October, and, unlike everyone else who had watched it all already, we only have to wait a couple of years for more!

On November 8th we finished watching Star Trek: Voyager. I didn’t have the feeeeelings that I had when we finished TNG but I enjoyed the show on the whole, especially past Season 3 or so.

On November 9th we watched the last episode of Angel. I had sporadically watched the show when it was actually on and had actually already seen the last episode. I just didn’t realize it was the last episode. The whole thing felt much more unresolved than Buffy.¬†I could have done with a couple more seasons.

Anyway, there’s that done! For some reason I thought this would take months and months, but we really started watching as soon as I started this challenge. I’ll keep tracking our progress, let’s see if we can double it! :0

24.¬†Scan my mom’s family photos.

Got through a handful of them while I was procrastinating about working my NaNoWriMo!

27.  Design & Print a 2015 calendar of my photos.
Eighty-Eight

Done. It came kind of crumpled by the postal service but otherwise I am super happy with it!

NaNoWriMo 2014: Days 12 – 16

320.Got a bit behind updating here, as I usually do during the glumpy week twos. I took a couple of days off last week, but only when I had the word count to spare. I’ve kept about a bit¬†ahead of daily requirements and even with¬†some intense desires to quit, for both Shaun and I myself, we stuck it out and I feel pretty good about what I have going on right now. Events have taken place. Things are happening. Marriage, kidnapping, intrigue!

My self portrait theme this week is yoga, just to make sure I do it in the midst of NaNoWriMo and I feel pretty great. It snowed yesterday! I took a bubble bath today. I smell like geraniums. I have no idea what I’m going to cook for dinner because we decided not to go to the grocery store yesterday while it was snowing. Shaun is going to get the stuff on my list on his way home from work, but all my planned dinners this week were for the slow cooker, so it doesn’t do a lot of good to get ingredients around 4pm. But I’ll rustle something together. We have lentils for days and days, after all.

It’s getting harder and harder to share bits of my novel. This happens every year too. But whatever! Here we find our heroine experiencing her own bout of the week twos:

Thinking about her novel sent her on another spiral. Her stupid, terrible novel. She should go downstairs right now and thrust it into the fire, but no, here’s Georgette standing in the open door and she can see what a waste of space you are.

Here’s a peek at my spreadsheet wordcounts so far this month:¬†nano111614
