My year in video: 2011

My first full year of video, and what a lovely year it was, too.

Projects throughout the years: A picture a day in 2011.

2011 was a good year. We had a blizzard, I learned to crochet, we took a train to San Antonio and all year, we celebrated lots of life with lots of family. Looking through the photos for this year feels extra bittersweet to me.

Today we are going to say goodbye to this amazing lady. The sky is currently gray, and rain is slowly dripping off the eaves, and off the eaves of her house next door, too, which gives me a feeling. I feel so grateful to her for the part she did in raising Shaun, and for all the times she simply called me “granddaughter.” I feel lucky that I got to eat her chocolate pie, that I sleep most nights under one of her quilts, and that the last time I saw her she squeezed me so tight, still so strong, and told me she loved me. Goodbye Grandma, I love you too.

My year in video: 2010

In May of 2010 I got a Canon Rebel T2i and started shooting little videos of our life.

Projects throughout the years: A Picture a Day 2009

2009 started out rough. What I remember most about the beginning of the year was how Shaun took care of me. My dad had just died and I felt very helpless and brokenhearted. Shaun spent a lot of the school break packing me and my cameras into the car and driving me to pretty places to distract me with photography, like he had perfectly intuited what I needed at that moment. The whole world felt different. I felt so broken, but also braver. My dad dying was (and still is) the worst thing that had ever happened in my life and I had faced it and my anxiety wasn’t so scary anymore. I spent some time wallowing in the groove on the couch created by my grief-stricken Lord of The Rings marathons, yes, but I came out stronger than ever. I also think my photography became more important, it had more purpose, I wanted to capture every single thing about my life, and preserve it forever.

Projects throughout the years, A Picture a Day, 2008

2008 is a hard year to write about. We started the year at Disney World, and that was wonderful. I had just quit my job to focus on our home and my photography full time.  In October my dad entered the hospital, he never left. On December 14, 2008, he died.  Even before that, it had felt like a hard year, my anxiety was very bad.

Through all of this, I kept up a daily photo project, and in August, on my 23rd birthday, I started a 365 self portrait project as well (I’ll do a post about that in a bit.) I did them concurrently and didn’t miss a day of either project (though on hard days I did overlap and use one photo for both sets.) There was something therapeutic about creating something during this time, or anyway, it was a good distraction.

It’s hard for me to revisit some of these, but here are the highlights and milestones of 2008:

Grandma Norma’s 100th Birthday

My husband’s Grandma turned 100 on Monday!

She is one of the kindest people I have ever known and I feel so, so lucky to have had her in my life these past 11 years.

Eleven Months into 30 before 30

30 before 30

1. Cook 30 new recipes 86/30 I made 3 new recipes this month! I actually made 2 other things for the first time, but one was something super easy that I made without a recipe (daiya quesadillas) and the other was so altered in ingredients (gumbo is literally not gumbo without okra) that I didn’t feel right including it.

Louisiana Red Beans & Rice Korean Hot Pot Rainbow Millet-Hummus Collard Summer Rolls

84. Louisiana Red Beans and Rice (One-Dish Vegan)
85. Korean Hot Pot (One-Dish Vegan)
86. Rainbow Millet-Hummus Collard Summer Rolls (But I Could Never Go Vegan!)

2. Shoot 1 roll of film per month. 11/12 I got a super late start this month again, I didn’t actually finish my June roll until July 4th and then I decided to finish a mysterious roll that was in my Vivitar Ultra Wide & Slim. Who knows when I started it? My hope was that it would actually only have a few shots left and I could pop a fresh roll into it and use it for July but that didn’t happen until the 14th! The roll is about halfway shot, now!

7. Reach Advanced Level yoga with Erin Motz’s DoYouYoga course.

Day 74: Saw lots of friends doing this today for #backbendnoend and I really wanted to try it. It felt really good! Especially on the side I am doing in the bottom picture. Weirdly effortless and dreamy. #yoga #100happydays

16. Veganize 10 of my family’s recipes. 0/10

I thought this was going to be one of the easy ones, but my mom’s recipe cards are missing! I have some family church cookbooks that have some distant relatives in them, but most of the recipes that appeal to me are vegan already! One of them is for canned vegetable soup and another for pickles!

17. Make canned pickles!

My plan is to make the kind of pickles you can pretty much eat immediately. Basic vinegary cabbages, or something. Totally delicious and stress free. Not going to get into heat sealing yet. Doing what I can to get this stuff done. Real pickles is still a future goal! I got some super cute little jars earlier this month, so… that’s progress!

21. Start a 365 photo set on my 29th birthday. Finish it! Here are some of my favorite shots from this month:

23. See five movies in the theater 2/5

Starting this goal took longer than I had expected! It seems unbelievable that we hadn’t seen a movie in the theater since sometime before my last birthday, but it just hasn’t been in our budget.

28. Write a list of major cleaning projects and do them all!

  • move all furniture and clean behind/under it. (fridge, dressers, couch, entertainment center.) (Progress: Calling this done. Kitchen, bathroom, living room done in month 6. One half of bedroom done in month 7. Library is still such a work in progress that I doubt I’ll get it finished, but all of the rooms we use regularly are looking good. I just need to do a little more in the bedroom and some of that requires getting rid of furniture. It should get done in the next year)
  • clean the fridge out. (Progress: Fridge done. Still need to hit the freezer!)
  • take ALL THAT RECYCLING so the cozy system can start working. (Progress: Done.)
  • take everything to Goodwill. (Progress: One carload done, only have a few boxes left to go.)
  • finish each room. If I still have to have stuff piled in a corner, at least let it be stored in a plastic tub. (Progress: Living room: Done. Laundry room: Done. Dining Room: as done as it will get. )
  • closet overhaul. (Progress: Started the bedroom closet. Made a lot of hanger space, so far, need to work on the stuff that’s on shelves next!)
  • Springtime Garden Tidy. (Progress: I managed everything by the back lot, and now it’s summer and unbearable. Major progress though! Calling it done. Everything else is maintenance.)

Only one month to go! I’ll be hustling to get some of this stuff done and accepting that other things just won’t happen, yet. But I’m not giving up on anything!

Eight Months into 30 before 30

30 before 301. Cook 30 new recipes 65/30

7. Reach Advanced Level yoga with Erin Motz’s DoYouYoga course.

I’ve done a lot of yoga this month, feeling pretty good about this one. :)

I could have hung out at this stage for a long time but I could only straighten my legs for a couple of seconds today. My falling was super graceful and controlled though, I

18. Print another photo book.

Since this project has involved going through and re-editing my photos it has taken a long time. I’m somewhere in the middle of October of 2007 for a photo book that will only span June – December of that year and I’m already past 200 pages. When I was first starting to really practice and study photography I was super prolific, whoops. I’m going to admit that I might not be able to afford to actually PRINT this book until after my birthday, I will consider this done if I finish all of the other work involved because I have put many hours into it.

Here’s a couple of two-page spreads I’m really happy with:

book001 book002

In 2007 I had some interest in being a commercial photographer, at least in terms stock photography. I have a lot of stuff I shot with that aim that I really love in retrospect but actually shooting photography for someone other than myself wasn’t fun at the time and I decided to focus on more emotive/photo diary work. I’m curious what future photo books will be like, especially everything past the death of my dad in December of 2008, when I realized that capturing and remembering my real life was the most important thing to me artistically.

21. Start a 365 photo set on my 29th birthday. Finish it!

Here are some of my favorites this month:

  • move all furniture and clean behind/under it. (fridge, dressers, couch, entertainment center.) (Progress: Kitchen, bathroom, living room done in month 6. One half of bedroom done in month 7.)
  • clean the fridge out. (Progress: I did the fridge a couple of weeks ago. I was surprised by how many jars of useless stuff I had in there. I felt like I was being good at keeping it down to the essentials, but nope! I still need to clean the freezer, but in general it stays a little cleaner.)
  • take ALL THAT RECYCLING so the cozy system can start working. (Progress: Still need to take all the paper and cardboard, but the rest of it is kept sorted and tidy.)
  • take everything to Goodwill. (Progress: I just keep adding boxes and bags. I have SO MUCH that’s on it’s way out, I can’t wait to reclaim that space!)
  • finish each room. If I still have to have stuff piled in a corner, at least let it be stored in a plastic tub. (Progress: Living room I would call done. I hung some curtains this month There are lots of living room photos above in my yoga shots.)
  • closet overhaul. (Progress: Lots of little adjustments but nothing worth noting.)
  • NEW Springtime Garden Tidy. (Progress: Gardening update.)
