Post-30 Before 30 Update: #18. Print another photo book

30 before 30 list thing that I finally did when I was 31

In December I finished and printed the book I had started working on in 2014/15 for my 30 before 30 project. The main holdup was cost, but another one was that initially the book only spanned June – December, when I got my dSLR ,and I had to hunt down CDs of photos from January – May, and then settle on the decision not to rescan film photos.

Blurb often has really wonderful coupons around Christmas, so I was able to take advantage of that and print a 404 page book with over 1000 photos for about $85.

Sifting through and editing so many photos from 2007 is what led me to make my @ten.years.ago Instagram account, where I am sharing these newly edited photos exactly ten years after I originally shot them. That’s where you want to go if you want to see the highlights from the book. I definitely plan to get started on fresh edits from my photos in 2008 later this year, though who knows when I’ll get THAT book printed!

2.   Shoot 1 roll of film per month. 12/12

My last roll of film is in my Kodak Cameo. I can’t wait to get all of these rolls developed and scanned. I will be posting them here when I do!

3.  Write 9th NaNoWriMo novel.

(check out the nanowrimo tag)

4. Hardcore cull my wardrobe.

I didn’t do quite as much as I had wanted to, but my wardrobe is undeniably culled! I donated a giant trash bag full of things I didn’t wear anymore!

5. Save money for a new camera.

I love my new camera a lot. It’s super easy to carry. I want a better portrait lens, for sure, but I have really enjoyed the freedom to only carry a cute-mid-sized purse, as opposed to my camera bag which was occasionally mistaken for a diaper bag.

6. Finish afghan.

It was hard to work on this one after it got hot. Everything is done except for weaving in the ends, though, and we used it on our bed through spring. It’s practically done, it’s a functioning blanket!

7. Reach Advanced Level yoga with Erin Motz’s DoYouYoga course

When I started I was afraid that this one was impossible. Or that I would “do” the classes, but they would actually be too exhausting for me. However, I have actually reached an advanced level of yoga this year! I can’t do everything in these classes, most “flying” poses are still beyond me, but I no longer collapse in the middle of the advanced classes, and I managed to do all 49 of them to my satisfaction.

10.  Fill my first Smash journal.

(Smash Journal tag)

11. See a play.

This just didn’t happen. I really wasn’t paying attention to what plays were going on and so nothing I was particularly interested in was playing during my last month rush to get things done, I wasn’t going to go and see whatever just because it would check a box for me. This is ostensibly an “easy” one, which is probably why I kept putting it off. File this under the list: Things to do WHILE I’m 30, because these things undone are still goals for me. The “end” of the challenge doesn’t mean I’m never going to go to a play!

12. Day trip to Norman.

Blogged here.

13. Go bowling.

Could have done this one, I guess, but we’re trying to save money. Maybe it will be a treat during an upcoming school break!

14.  Try 5 new cocktails. 5/5

This happened pretty easily. Whenever we ate somewhere that had fancy cocktails, I’d try something new. Shaun filled my advent calendar last year with tiny bottles of liquors I’d never had and we found cocktail recipes for some of them. Finally, this summer, we had a good amount of sangria. Sangria just kept falling in my lap.

15. Learn the math I skipped.

This is a pretty personal goal that I haven’t updated along the way. I definitely made progress, using Khan Academy, but I didn’t meet the mental goal I had set for myself. I’m still glad to feel like it’s something I COULD do, though. It was fun to feel like I was really learning something. If you know someone struggling with math I really recommend Khan Academy!

16. Veganize 10 of my family’s recipes. 0/10

There are less family recipes than I thought, I guess! Maybe someday!

17. Make canned pickles!

Altered this one to get it done! I used this non-canning recipe.

Three-Hundred & Forty-Eight

Each jar has different seasoning. They’re all super delicious!! I’m on my third jar, ahahahaha.

18. Print another photo book.

Since this is expensive (looking at $70+ for the book I am currently working on,) I had mentally altered my goal to: Finish editing photos from 2007 for the photo book. And I still didn’t get it done! I took more photos in 2007 (16,000+) than any other year. I do have a lot to show for this goal, though, I have edited and culled my folders from 2007. I’ve deleted about 7000 photos and have edited around 900 photos that I’m really happy with. I have 2 more months of photos to go through.

19.  Try 5 new ways to style my hair. 5/5

I thought I would get pictures of each style, but the fishtail braid was really the only one that I liked well enough to photograph at all. My hair isn’t super easy to style. I tried, though!

20. Get everything boxed or bagged to donate.

Well. We took about 10 boxes and a large bag of clothes to the donation center. We have 4 boxes left that wouldn’t fit in the car and I haven’t even started in the library or library closet. This is huge progress. I don’t think I realized quite how much I was holding onto things I didn’t need. I’ve gotten much better at letting things go this year. I haven’t gone through everything I want to go through yet.

21. Start a 365 photo set on my 29th birthday. Finish it!

I’m pretty happy with this project, as a whole! Here are my favorite shots from the last month.

22. Finish watching 5 of the TV series we’re currently working through on Netflix. 5/5

In the end, I think we watched more than 5 of the series we had in our streaming queue. One of the things that makes me painfully anxious is unexpected/embarrassing/tense moments on TV shows. It’s a silly anxiety, but most of my anxieties are. We got into a good routine with these shows on Netflix and my anxiety about watching TV has lessened a lot this year.

23. See 5 movies in the theater. 2/5

We saw 2. We had planned to go once a week the last 3 weeks but we had car trouble, which both kept us home and added an expense for the month. There are lots of movies that came out the past year that I wanted to see in the theater. It’s my favorite way to see movies. But I had a great year and we saved money by staying home, which I  was able to put towards other things on this list, like getting my camera.

24. Scan my mom’s family photos

I worked on this at least once a month, really. It was hard to make myself do it in the summer, when I would much rather be working on, say, my video game goal! I will try to keep this pace, anyway, and eventually I will get it all done.

25. Organize all of the closets.

I got some of the laundry room closets taken care of. The office closet is basically untouched this past year, though I have organized it before, I’m not happy with the system I used.

I did get a whole lot done in the bedroom!

26. Write in a journal once a week.

I switched from my paper journal to something saved on my computer after the new year, but I have written something about every day so far, and I will continue that private project through the end of the year.

27.  Design & Print a 2015 calendar of my photos.

I designed two, and gave them as Christmas gifts!

28. Write a list of major cleaning projects and do them all!

This list is about half done. Lots of important progress, though!

  • move all furniture and clean behind/under it. (fridge, dressers, couch, entertainment center.) (Progress: Calling this done. Kitchen, bathroom, living room done in month 6. One half of bedroom done in month 7. Library is still such a work in progress that I doubt I’ll get it finished, but all of the rooms we use regularly are looking good. I just need to do a little more in the bedroom and some of that requires getting rid of furniture. It should get done in the next year)
  • clean the fridge out. (Progress: Fridge done. Still need to hit the freezer!)
  • take ALL THAT RECYCLING so the cozy system can start working. (Progress: Done.)
  • take everything to Goodwill. (Progress: One carload done, only have a few boxes left to go.)
  • finish each room. If I still have to have stuff piled in a corner, at least let it be stored in a plastic tub. (Progress: Living room: Done. Laundry room: Done. Dining Room: as done as it will get. )
  • closet overhaul. (Progress: Started the bedroom closet. Made a lot of hanger space, so far, need to work on the stuff that’s on shelves next!)
  • Springtime Garden Tidy. (Progress: I managed everything by the back lot, and now it’s summer and unbearable. Major progress though! Calling it done. Everything else is maintenance.)

29. Do a sewing project with my mom.

My mom comes over every Monday to work on a painting and have dinner with us. I thought we would have plenty of time to add in another project, something simple like placemats or curtains, but time just got away from both of us!  I failed this goal partly because my mom has been painting paid commissions while she’s here, instead of just for fun things like when I set the goal. I’m super glad that my mom has had so many commissions, and I still got to spend the time with her.

30. Shoot a day in photos on my 30th birthday!

Here it is!

Eleven Months into 30 before 30

30 before 30

1. Cook 30 new recipes 86/30 I made 3 new recipes this month! I actually made 2 other things for the first time, but one was something super easy that I made without a recipe (daiya quesadillas) and the other was so altered in ingredients (gumbo is literally not gumbo without okra) that I didn’t feel right including it.

84. Louisiana Red Beans and Rice (One-Dish Vegan)
85. Korean Hot Pot (One-Dish Vegan)
86. Rainbow Millet-Hummus Collard Summer Rolls (But I Could Never Go Vegan!)

2. Shoot 1 roll of film per month. 11/12 I got a super late start this month again, I didn’t actually finish my June roll until July 4th and then I decided to finish a mysterious roll that was in my Vivitar Ultra Wide & Slim. Who knows when I started it? My hope was that it would actually only have a few shots left and I could pop a fresh roll into it and use it for July but that didn’t happen until the 14th! The roll is about halfway shot, now!

7. Reach Advanced Level yoga with Erin Motz’s DoYouYoga course.

16. Veganize 10 of my family’s recipes. 0/10

I thought this was going to be one of the easy ones, but my mom’s recipe cards are missing! I have some family church cookbooks that have some distant relatives in them, but most of the recipes that appeal to me are vegan already! One of them is for canned vegetable soup and another for pickles!

17. Make canned pickles!

My plan is to make the kind of pickles you can pretty much eat immediately. Basic vinegary cabbages, or something. Totally delicious and stress free. Not going to get into heat sealing yet. Doing what I can to get this stuff done. Real pickles is still a future goal! I got some super cute little jars earlier this month, so… that’s progress!

  • Springtime Garden Tidy. (Progress: I managed everything by the back lot, and now it’s summer and unbearable. Major progress though! Calling it done. Everything else is maintenance.)

Only one month to go! I’ll be hustling to get some of this stuff done and accepting that other things just won’t happen, yet. But I’m not giving up on anything!

I got a little bit of a late start because I had to buy some film. It’s not as easy to find as it used to be! I got some a couple of weeks into the month and loaded into my Diana Mini because I haven’t shot anything in it in over a year. It’s shoots more frames than you usually get from a 24 exposure roll, though, so it might not have been the best choice for a month when I got a late start, I haven’t quite finished the roll yet.

I should have done this before it started growing up so it’s not as tidy as it COULD be but it looks so much better. I also cleaned the grass and trees that were growing in the street by our house, edged all the sidewalks, got a new hose and a cuter, more accessible way to store it on the porch this month. My mom went around with her big ratchet clippers and helped me cut down some ill-placed trees, I just need to dig them up now.)

18. Print another photo book.

Since this project has involved going through and re-editing my photos it has taken a long time. I’m somewhere in the middle of October of 2007 for a photo book that will only span June – December of that year and I’m already past 200 pages. When I was first starting to really practice and study photography I was super prolific, whoops. I’m going to admit that I might not be able to afford to actually PRINT this book until after my birthday, I will consider this done if I finish all of the other work involved because I have put many hours into it.

Here’s a couple of two-page spreads I’m really happy with:

book001 book002

In 2007 I had some interest in being a commercial photographer, at least in terms stock photography. I have a lot of stuff I shot with that aim that I really love in retrospect but actually shooting photography for someone other than myself wasn’t fun at the time and I decided to focus on more emotive/photo diary work. I’m curious what future photo books will be like, especially everything past the death of my dad in December of 2008, when I realized that capturing and remembering my real life was the most important thing to me artistically.

28. Write a list of major cleaning projects and do them all!

  • move all furniture and clean behind/under it. (fridge, dressers, couch, entertainment center.) (Progress: Kitchen, bathroom, living room done in month 6. One half of bedroom done in month 7.)
  • clean the fridge out. (Progress: I did the fridge a couple of weeks ago. I was surprised by how many jars of useless stuff I had in there. I felt like I was being good at keeping it down to the essentials, but nope! I still need to clean the freezer, but in general it stays a little cleaner.)
  • take ALL THAT RECYCLING so the cozy system can start working. (Progress: Still need to take all the paper and cardboard, but the rest of it is kept sorted and tidy.)
  • take everything to Goodwill. (Progress: I just keep adding boxes and bags. I have SO MUCH that’s on it’s way out, I can’t wait to reclaim that space!)
  • finish each room. If I still have to have stuff piled in a corner, at least let it be stored in a plastic tub. (Progress: Living room I would call done. I hung some curtains this month There are lots of living room photos above in my yoga shots.)
  • closet overhaul. (Progress: Lots of little adjustments but nothing worth noting.)
  • NEW Springtime Garden Tidy. (Progress: Gardening update.)

2. Shoot 1 roll of film per month. 7/12 I knew we were going on a trip this month so I thought a roll in the Split-Cam would be fun!

7. Reach Advanced Level yoga with Erin Motz’s DoYouYoga courseI did some really non-yoga yoga to start the month, this 14 day shred with Sadie Nardini. Generally not my thing, but I’ve been wanting to do more real cardio, so I think it’s been good for me. I don’t regret doing it, but I doubt I’ll ever repeat it. I got knocked down by some bad allergies in the middle of it, which made breathing a struggle, but I made it through the 14 days. I decided to check in with Wii Fit yoga after I finished that challenge and immediately pulled something in my shoulders, so I had to take some time off to heal. Slow and easy stretching yoga for a week or so and I think I’ll be back on my feet.

8. Finish 5 video games. 2/5 I’ve left some visual novels off of this, but I am counting Gone Home, I don’t know why, maybe because it was so damned good. I also played through a couple of scenarios in Hatoful Boyfriend, but it’s so quick and silly, and I played The Yawhg with friends and with Shaun a few times. Mostly I have been playing Dragon Age: Inquisition for a couple of months and I beat it on March 5th, I clocked just over 100 hours in my first play-through and started a new character immediately. I need to mix it up a little because I’m not going to count it twice if/when I beat it again!

28. Write a list of major cleaning projects and do them all!

  1. move all furniture and clean behind/under it. (fridge, dressers, couch, entertainment center.) (Progress: Kitchen, bathroom, living room done in month 6. Moved everything on the side of our bedroom where the bed is this month, still have a lot to do in there!)
  2. clean the fridge out. (Progress: I was in a bit of a rush the other day, but we were between groceries and it was pretty empty, so I gave the whole interior a good wipe down. I know there are some things in the back recesses that still need tossed, though!)
  3. take ALL THAT RECYCLING so the cozy system can start working. (Progress: Still need to take the paper. Also have another full load of cardboard boxes already.)
  4. take everything to Goodwill. (Progress: Added two boxes and one large tub to the piles of stuff that needs to go.)
  5. finish each room. If I still have to have stuff piled in a corner, at least let it be stored in a plastic tub. (Progress: Got curtains hung in the living room, I need one tension bar and 4 hooks installed to pull the curtains back with and the room will be done.)
  6. closet overhaul. (Progress: Just little bits here and there throughout the month in the bedroom closet. I really thought I would get it done this month, but other life things kind of got in the way.)

25th of February – 25th of March is a short month! I didn’t get everything done this month that I had hoped to. I’m definitely starting to feel the crunch on some of these, I need to make a timeline list and work on some of the more ongoing things, like scanning my mom’s photos, more often.

30 before 30 #12: Trip to Norman

Day One, Monday, March 16, Norman via Oklahoma City: It’s only a couple of hours drive from our place to Norman, so we took a leisurely drive, stopping off for some shopping in OKC along the way.

We spent the evening sipping hot tea and marveling at how abysmal cable television is. We watched an episode of Full House on mute.

Day two, March 17, Norman. We spent the morning at the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History, and then explored the OU Campus a bit. We got roped into some kind of filming that was happening on the street (which unfortunately involved “acting” on my part. He was like, you won’t have do do anything but stand here, except, maybe you, you’ll walk up and point. GRUMP.) and then we had a delicious lunch at Pepe Delgado’s.

New Converse. We both got our black converse 8 years ago and they barely functioned as shoes anymore. We generally get something we really need instead of souvenirs while we’re on vacation. The best way to remember a trip fondly is with something you will actually use.

This time around, Shaun got gray.

& I opted for red.

I also got this cardigan because I completely forgot to bring anything long sleeved, even though I knew it was going to get cold and rainy.

Day 3, March 18, OKC Zoo.

On our way home we went to the OKC Zoo. I’d never been before and the last two-thirds of it was lovely. I hope that the rest of the zoo improves to that level because the older areas were very grim.

2. Shoot 1 roll of film per month. 6/12 I put another roll in the Canon Rebel 2000, this time I have my Sigma 28 – 70mm zoom lens on it. This is the first camera/lens combo I have done for this project that I can effectively shoot self portraits with, so that will be fun.

Save money for a new dSLR. camera. I settled on buying a mirrorless camera instead of a dSLR. My dSLR (Canon Rebel t2i) is still fabulous for almost every purpose, even if it is looking a little rough, replacing it completely with something nearly identical in size and function felt a little ridiculous. I’m always wanting something smaller and lighter to carry with me everywhere, so the name of this goal changed.

NX3000

And here comes in the Samsung NX3000, it’s super cute and the image quality is really quite good. It’s a bit cheaper than the other cameras I was considering so I was able to get it right away. It’s got lots of gimmicky bells and whistles that I’m super keen to try out. Here are some of the first photos I have taken with it:

It also takes truly excellent food photos, as you can see on my recipe update above.

7. Reach Advanced Level yoga with Erin Motz’s DoYouYoga courseI did some back pedaling over the winter holidays. It’s so hard to get motivated! January was a bit of an off month as well but towards the end of the month I started redoing Erin Motz’s 30 day yoga challenge (this one) and it was a great way to ease back into practice and get used to the daily routine of it. I finished last week and haven’t missed a day of yoga since, between cycling through the moderate classes and catching up on some of Erin Motz’s Bad Yogi offerings (I’m kind of a fangirl) I haven’t missed a day of yoga in 37 days. I also managed my first headstand (not quite pictured below) and hung out in a super solid crow pose for the first time. Getting a picture of yourself in a headstand in not the easiest thing to do. ;)

12. Day trip to Norman. We booked a hotel room last night and decided to stay two nights. We’ve already planned where we’re going to eat dinner each night. Shaun matriculated at OU and we were pretty excited to find that his favorite Indian and Mexican restaurants are still there. We haven’t been to Norman in about 10 years. Mostly we’re just gonna walk around leisurely and decide what to do spontaneously.  I love to plan and research, but I hate the stress of micromanaged trips, when you’re tied down by an itinerary I feel like you’re living between the experiences, and rushing is the worst. I’m looking into all of the possibilities but the only concrete goal is to go to the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History because Natural History is my favorite. Love it SO MUCH.

14. Try 5 new cocktails. 4/5 Went to Yokozuna in downtown Tulsa at the end of January to fete my January & February babies. My brother’s birthday is January 5, my mom’s is January 20 and Shaun’s is February 8. I had a Hello Sumo, Hello Kitty, which is Malibu coconut rum, mango juice, and a splash of grenadine on the rocks. No more cocktails until after Lent!

19. Try 5 new ways to style my hair. 1/5 I learned how to fishtail braid at the end of January! You can kind of see it in photo two of my 30 self portraits in 2015 goal above. I’m hoping to get a massive trim pretty soon which will make my hair a bit easier to style. I have snaggledy snarled ends right now.

20. Get everything boxed or bagged to donate. Amazing progress on this. I’m probably going to keep stockpiling stuff until Spring Break when we’ll have the time to actually take it to a donation center. We’re about to have 3 pieces of furniture that will need donated as well, and no good way to store them, so I guess they’ll just get shoved into our least used room to give me anxiety until we can get rid of them! I also need more cardboard boxes, which is a bit ridiculous because we just took a bunch of them to the recycling center.

21. Start a 365 photo set on my 29th birthday. Finish it! Here are some favorite photos from this project this month!

25. Organize all of the closets. I took some Before pictures of the library closet (I am very bad at remembering to take Before pictures, see below where  I took In The Middle Of pictures of the living room!) They are actually after pictures for my big organize the closets project of 2013 but I put too much stuff on one of the shelves and it fell a bit and it’s just not as accessible as I would like. Prepared to be a lot more ruthless in tossing/donating stuff, too. I make a little progress all the time and it’s super gratifying. I’ll post those pictures when I have some real Afters to go with them!

28. Write a list of major cleaning projects and do them all! I wrote a list. I feel like there must be more, so I consider it a work in progress. Here it is so far, though. I feel a bit… sheepish? that it encompasses some of my other 30 before 30 goals. I’m not gonna kick myself for making a list that is do-able when it is also a list that is going to improve my life so much.

  1. move all furniture and clean behind/under it. (fridge, dressers, couch, entertainment center.) (Progress: I moved everything movable in the kitchen and bathroom and cleaned the floors completely on the 19th. I moved everything in the living room except my desk and cleaned underneath them on the 20th, I also cleaned the baseboards and crown molding with method oil soap. On the 23rd I pulled out my desk, shoved it into the library and cleaned the floors before replacing it with a much nicer desk.)
  2. clean the fridge out.
  3. take ALL THAT RECYCLING so the cozy system can start working. (Progress: We took everything but paper on the 13th!)
  4. take everything to Goodwill.
  5. finish each room. If I still have to have stuff piled in a corner, at least let it be stored in a plastic tub. (Progress: The living room is SO CLOSE to finished. I need to do some work in the bedroom to make space for some stuff that’s currently piled in the living room corner and move Shaun’s PC tower by the TV. We’re going to hook it up to the TV and get rid of his desk in the dining room. He’s now working off a little laptop at the dining table that can be stored super easily.)
  6. closet overhaul.

kitchen

new desk!

All in all this was a super productive month and I’m really happy with my progress.

Now for a quick halfway-point rundown! I haven’t finished half of the list, but I shouldn’t have. A lot of it is quite ongoing and won’t be finished until the last month, in fact, #30 won’t be done until I go to bed on my birthday. I’ve finished 5 items completely and I’ve started working on another 19 of the items on my list, I feel pretty happy with that. I’ve already experienced a lot of general improvement to my day to day life from what I’ve accomplished. Maybe I would have done some of this stuff without this list, and maybe I wouldn’t have, I can’t say, but I wouldn’t have tracked it like this, which has been a lot of fun for me. I love lists and I work so well with self-imposed deadlines.
