We have had some extremely cold temperatures lately. Single digits and subzero wind chills. Harsh, but beautiful stuff.

NaNoWriMo 2017: Days 22 – 27

IMG_20171126_114350_812.jpgSo, uh, I wrote 6,197 words yesterday and two of them were “The End.”

finalBacking up a moment, I also wrote on the 22nd, 25 and 26th. I sometimes look at this spreadsheet and think: Golly, if I wrote like this straight through, I could finish in 21 days! But you gotta take days off, or I do, anyway.

I haven’t experienced a November without NaNoWriMo since I was 16 years old. I wonder what they’re like? I’m open to maybe… MAYBE taking next year off. I’ve never even been open to that before. November is a great month and sometimes I feel like it happens without me.

We’ll see how I feel next year!

NaNoWriMo 2017: Days 17 – 21

I didn’t write on the 17th. I did other admin chores and Shaun and I had a date night. It was super.

I wrote 3,510 words on the 18th, a fair amount of it doing sprints with my friend Summer and the NaNoWordSprints twitter. I killed a character, I rarely ever do that!

I didn’t write on the 19th.

IMG_20171120_091640-01.jpgI wrote 2,404 words on the 20th, more sprints with Summer & NaNoWordSprints.

I wrote 2,333 words on the 21st. A lot of it was going back and adding scenes because I feel like I’m hurtling towards the end of my story and I still have about 14k words to go. I definitely left plenty of room earlier in the story for character building, though. I still have loads to work with.

Here’s the last sentence I wrote:

“You’ve made quite a mistake,” she said.

All told I have written 8,247 words since I last made a wordpress update.

NaNoWriMo 2017: Day 15

Halfway there! I struggled to get started and I only wrote 1041 words yesterday, but I did pass 25k so I’m still on track!

IMG_20171115_072501.jpgI haven’t done the laundry once this month. NaNoWriMo traditions! I really need to do it, though. :\

NaNoWriMo 2017: Day 13

IMG_0016

I basically went from “I guess I won’t be writing at all today!” to “Oh! I just wrote 2,824 words.”  It was a rough start. I’m having another rough start today, to the extent that writing this blog post feels like treading water. I don’t know what else to say. Things are hard and then they’re easier and then they’re hard again but I’m pretty sure they’ll be easier again, too.

I got my Vistaquest VQ1005 camera out. The way it makes the world look cheers me up.

NaNoWriMo 2017: Days 11 & 12

I didn’t write on Saturday.

IMG_20171111_222233_936.jpg

Yesterday, we took care of some weekend chores and then I wrote a couple of half hours. The first one went really well, I got 1038 words, the second one, not quite as good with 825. It was very mindless writing. I’m definitely in the terrible week twos, which is really whatever week it is that takes me from 15k to 30k and then things get a little bit easier. I have a handful of scenes I want to have happen, but I don’t actually know everything that’s going on yet. I accidentally skipped a scene but I’m holding onto it, I’ll go back and write it at the end if I need the words and I’ve taken note of where it should go. This is The Slog and I just have to get through it.

NaNoWriMo 2017: Day 10

IMG_20171110_152829_511.jpg

Yesterday I wrote just enough to keep a little bit of a lead. I did three sprints, a 15, a 20 and a 10 minute and got 1,653 words. I spent most of the day moving furniture and cleaning house to prepare for Christmas decorations.

The last sentence I wrote:

You can tell the feelings that they’re wrong until the cows come home, but then you’re left with feelings and cows.

NaNoWriMo 2017: Day 8

(These are photos I took when I was working on my NaNoWriMo ten years ago! More little updates on that on my ten.years.ago instagram.)

I had a pretty successful writing day yesterday. I had my best sprint times with @NaNoWordSprints so far this year. My best times were 520 in a 15 minute sprint and 1082 in a 30. I’m basically having a lot of exposition right now that would normally be hinted at and alluded to, but I don’t know it all myself, so I have to let the characters tell me all in one go. It’s fun and fast to write, but probably not super fun to read.

My novel is definitely doing that thing, though, where a story is building and the characters know things I don’t know yet, they catch on to things that I had accidentally laid groundwork for. For boring example: There were really nice beauty products in the bathroom, and the main character was surprised by them, but now it has been revealed the the orphan twins’ mother owned a beauty company. It’s super subtle and boring but also magical when there ends up being a reason for some random scene that just happened because I knew I could get a lot of words describing nice toiletries.

At the end of the day, I got 2,113 words written. I’m still about that much behind, but I’m chipping away at it. I’m hoping for some more 3k days!

The last sentence I wrote was a character telling me something I did not, in fact, know:

She was his older sister, you know.

NaNoWriMo 2017: Day 7

20171107-IMG_6826.jpg

I didn’t start writing until the afternoon and then my computer started acting weird. The monitor has been doing glitchy things for a while. I think the connection might have been a little dusty, I reconnected things and: so far so good! That and my late start and few other chores meant that I didn’t get much done on my novel. I wrote for about 20 minutes and got 670 words for the day. Oh well!

The last sentence I wrote:

“My brother Cloyd worked here in the stables and got me on not long after Xavier’s parents were married.”

Riveting.
